Gong Li spices up Miami Vice
In the 1980's I used to watch Miami
Vice every week on TV. You can say I was a fan of the series. I
also watched the re-runs a couple of years ago. So when I heard
Michael Mann was doing a remake for the cinema, I was very
enthusiastic! So yesterday I went to see it. Unfortunately the movie
isn't as good as the series, but if you like fast boats, cars,
beautiful women and crime stories, you will probably have a great two hours.
What really made it worth while for me was the sudden
appearance of this Asian woman, which I immediately recognized as Gong
Li. Then I thought, NO! This can’t be her; she just looks
too young to be Gong Li! Well, it was her alright! As you can
imagine, Gong
Li as lead female role in this favourite series of mine, really
got me all excited. She did a great job as drug dealer-boss and
Sonny's love interest. Why did nobody tell me she was in the movie?! |

Despite the
fact that these people are technically 'Asians' by geographical
location on the map, they have generally not been labeled as such in
parts of or in some cases all of Western society. However, in many
occasions, the term "Asian" is also used as a description
of certain cultures.
Probably the
best answer to the question "Who is an Asian?" is "who
calls themselves Asians?". Russians, "Southwest Asians"
and Middle Easterners may rarely call themselves Asians. There are
many conflicting dynamics in regards to very specific identity
affiliation. The only people who actually call themselves Asians are
the original people from the East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the
Indian Subcontinent [citation needed]. It should be noted, however,
that many Filipinos in the Philippines, while accepting that their
country geographically belongs to the Asian continent, do not call
themselves Asian (in the English sense of the word) due to their
cultural values and mostly non-East Asian physical features, and
consider such labeling as offensive and contrary to the multicultural
and multiethnic nature of their society.[citation needed]
However, South
Asians and Filipinos in Australia and North America often do not like
to be clustered into the same ethnic category as Asians from the Far
East i.e. East Asians. East Asians from Europe (especially Britain)
and Anglophone Africa often dislike being clustered with Asians from
the Indian subcontinent. Vietnamese people often do not like to be
clustered with other "Southeast Asians" and prefer being
clustered with other "East Asians". Others, who are of
Asian descent, only wish to be vaguely included in the Asia-Pacific
region as an identity |

Hong Kong
consists of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. The
Kowloon Peninsula is attached to the New Territories in the north,
and the New Territories are in turn connected to mainland China
across the Sham Chun River (Shenzhen River). In total, Hong Kong has
236 islands in the South China Sea, of which Lantau is the largest.
Hong Kong Island itself is the second largest and also the most
populated. Ap Lei Chau is the most densely populated island in the world.
What's in a
Name, Hong Kong Style
Considering
the many variations of Chinese names, it's not surprising that there
can be so much confusion. This is due to the nature of the Chinese
language itself, and the methods used to convert it into English.
Here are some observations on that subject coming from an American
viewpoint, which should also help to clarify the naming choices I've
made for Hong Kong Celeb.
The most
obvious difference in naming conventions from Western / European
standards is the order of 'first' name (sometimes informally referred
to as a 'Christian name') and family name. Chinese names, as well as
Japanese, are characterized by having the family name precede the
individual's given name. Represented by written characters, they
represent the same thing when written, but are pronounced differently
depending on the regional dialect (i.e Cantonese or Mandarin). |
